A 3-year-old’s death in Lemoore, California is being investigated by police after she killed herself with a gun in a bedroom of an apartment.

Children have recently been able to access unsafe firearms in their homes without constant supervision from an adult.

A 3-year-old in Lemoore, California was found alone in a bedroom of an apartment after she shot herself in the head with a nearby gun, according to ABC 30.

The child was visiting from Southern California and was staying with two women who live at the College Park apartment.

The deadly weapon didn’t have a locking mechanism and was openly available to the 3-year-old in the home.

Matthew Smith, a Lemoore Police Detective on the case, recently spoke about the incident.

“Based on my investigation and all the statements I've obtained and physical evidence, I believe it could have been avoided by simply securing a firearm,” he said.

After the incident, the 3-year-old was taken to Adventist Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
