9-Year-Old Journalist Has A Powerful Message For Haters

This young girl is breaking news and showing up reporters who don't pound the pavement for stories anymore.

Hilde Lysiak, at just 9, is the editor and publisher of the Orange Street News in her hometown of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and loves chasing crime stories and bringing them to people’s attention. She formed the news site in 2014 at the age of 7, and still is greatly involved with it.

“I just like letting people know all the information,” Hilde said Monday.

And that can mean breaking major news. Hilde recently got wind of heavy police activity on Ninth Street in her town. Her curiosity sparked, Hilde grabbed her pen and camera and made her way down to the location to cover a murder that had taken place.

She was the first to publish the online story and a video from the crime scene, beating the local daily paper to the race. “I’m working hard on this investigation,” she added.

However, some internet users did not appreciate the girl’s enthusiasm in such grim activities, and opined that a 9-year-old should be busy “playing with dolls” and enjoying life rather than reporting crime scenes. They also questioned her parents on the matter, raising concerns about why they would let their daughter indulge in such a thing.

Hilde's father, Matthew Lysiak, is an author who previously reported for New York Daily News and has had a great impact on his daughter and her passion for journalism. She now attends borough council meetings, interviews business owners and tracks any crimes she hears of.

Sadly, despite her commendable work, people called her out for not acting like a child. Yet, nothing seemed to bring Hilde down, as on Sunday morning, she released a video highlighting some of the negative comments she received and responded with a powerful message.

“If you want me to stop covering news, then you get off your computers and do something about the news. There, is that cute enough for you?” she said.

It's pretty disappointing that internet users are demoralizing Hilde and calling her out for taking an interest in journalism. Children at this age should be encouraged to pursue their passion, and indeed she is doing a great job with bringing to light important issues and events. Seeing her father as a reporter has obviously sparked the interest for journalism in Hilde, and she should be applauded for her outstanding work and brilliant imitative with the Orange Street News, since she is achieving so much at such a young age.
