News of a nine-year-old girl giving birth last month in Jalisco, Mexico is all over the web, the girl called Dafne, and her 5.7 pounds baby are both healthy. Dafne had a C-section because "her body was not ready to give birth," the director says.
It wasn't until she was seven months pregnant that the girl realized her condition. Police are now looking for the father of the child, reportedly 17 years old. Dafne says they had a good relationship, but prosecutors aren't sure. After learning she was pregnant, the boy asked Dafne to move in with him; when she said no, he left town, says the spokesperson. "We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened. This is a rape or child sex abuse case," says an official.

The fact that a preteen can even get pregnant let alone give birth is mind boggling, but it is not unfortunately rare. It is however dangerous and damaging. Dr. Abdulla Al-Khan, a leading high-risk obstetrician says a pre-teen’s body is not yet built to carry a child. "Her body is clearly not defined for pregnancy with its short stature," Al-Khan said. "Her chest is not extensively developed for breast tissue, her bones aren't quite fused, and once you expose a child this young to high amounts of progesterone and especially estrogen, there is (a possibility) that it could halt her growth."
Such pregnancies are strongly linked to poverty and single parenthood. Teen and pre-teen mothers are much more likely to go on welfare and become dependents and have low standards of living than average women.
