Three-year-old Wu Ningxi was miraculously rescued thanks to her 26-year-old father’s protective cuddle, which turned out to be their last embrace.

When a building in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, collapsed, the last person to be rescued was a three-year-old girl who only suffered minor injuries, Agence France-Presse reported.

Wu was found alive in the arms of her father, a shoe factory employee, who died when a large cement pillar fell on top of him. The pair was found in their living room, and the body of Wu’s mother was nearby.

Wu’s father protected his daughter as rubble fell around them during the residential disaster. Along with five others, the toddler was the last person to be discovered alive by rescuers.

A rescue worker explained the Wu’s miracle to the China Youth Daily, “The child was able to survive entirely thanks to the fact that her dad used his own flesh and blood to prop up a life-saving space for his daughter.”

The little girl was reportedly found 12 hours after the building collapsed, which left at least 22 of the building's occupants dead.

The cause of the disaster is still being investigated, but CCTV has suggested that poor construction in combination with heavy rainfall may have contributed to the catastrophe.

A Xinhua news agency reported that surrounding buildings from the 1970s are undergoing demolition due to safety violations, but this particular building — which primarily houses countryside migrants — has not been rebuilt.

The last sacrifice Wu's father made to protect his daughter's life amid the falling rubble is absolutely heartbreaking.
