Afghanistan’s New Football Kit Is Empowering Women

Two years after FIFA made an important rule change for Muslim female soccer players, Afghanistan unveiled its new-look uniform.

Afghanistan has taken a major step to support its women in sports.

The former captain of its women’s soccer team, Khalida Popal, has worked alongside the Danish company Hummel to design new sports kits for Afghan women.

The new uniform featuring a hijab allows women to actively take part in sports while maintaining their modesty. Many Muslim women in sports prefer to wear the traditional headscarf and this new feature thus gives them more freedom to practice their passion, while simultaneously sticking to the rules implied by their religion.

“I wanted something that reflected the strength of the Afghan character and incorporated the very best of the country's traditions and heritage. I think this shirt has achieved both,” Popal said.
