Amateur video shows a police officer's efforts to lead a woman and two children to safety in the Nairobi mall siege.
A terrified mother and her two children lie on the floor playing dead as gunfire rings out in a Nairobi shopping mall on Saturday (September 21).
During what seemed to have been a lull in the shooting, a police officer in civilian uniform slides forward on his stomach to reach the family to lead them to safety.
The terrified woman hesitates before the police officer was able to persuade them to come with him.
The death toll in an attack on the mall, that lasted 4 days, totaled to a grizzly 67. During the operation against the suspects five were reported to be killed and 11 captured.
The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack on the Kenyan capital's Westgate mall, which is frequented by Westerners as well as Kenyans. Several foreigners, including a Canadian diplomat, were among the dead.
Investigators and rescue workers were on Wednesday (September 25) picking through rubble of the mall after troops battled for four days with Islamist militants following the attack that killed at least 67 people and unknown number of assailants.
Another video that emerged on Sunday showed distraught shoppers and employees running through shopping aisles seeking shelter, with the sound of gunshots clearly being heard in the background.
