Earlier today, terrorists set fire to the Al-Rahma Islamic Centre in London England. The attack is another event related to growing racial tensions in the UK.
It’s also a pathetic act of cowardice by those responsible.
Arson, bombings, and other attacks which allow the perpetrator to escape unharmed are the lowest form of social control through fear. A terrorist attack is defined not just by the damage caused, but also by the message sent. Anonymous attacks like this one in Europe lead to death and destruction, but fail to provide any sort of message short of “these people are unwelcome”.
BBC London’s Kurt Barling speculates that the attack was a form of retaliation for the recent murder of a soldier in Woolwich. But because the men responsible lacked the fortitude to stand by their actions of hate and destruction, their true intentions will never be known.
The Somali community affected by this destruction is reportedly “Appalled and saddened” by the recent events, but hopefully they will soon show the courage and bravery that these attackers so sorely lack.
An investigation has been launched, and two men are already in custody in relation to attack. Even if their reasoning comes out at a later point, it will lack any sort of impact. In the end, these men will have thrown their lives away, and have nothing but a vague act of hatred to show for it.
