A Michigan anti abortion leader gave a rather controversial comment to the media regarding rape and insurance when she compared sexual assaults to car accidents.
When Right To Life president Barbara Listing was asked by a reporter how women could be expected to get abortion insurance in preparation of being raped, the lady answered by saying, “Nobody plans to have an accident in a car accident, nobody plans to have their homes flooded. You have to buy extra insurance for those two.”
On Wednesday, a group called No Taxes For Abortion Insurance, supported by Michigan’s Right To Life was approved by the Board of State Canvassers to initiate a petition prohibiting health insurance companies from covering elective abortion procedures.
If the petition receives more than 3.48% signatures from the registered voters in the state, the proposal can be adopted without the governor’s signature.
Barbara Listing is receiving a lot of negative criticism following her statement. A man called her ‘mentally ill’ on Twitter and another user expressed her loathe regarding Listing’s idea of a ‘rape insurance.’ The reaction makes sense because no one with common sense (and morals) would ever agree to buy a separate insurance for sexual assault. It’s just downright ridiculous and condemnable.
The comparison Listing made was not just inappropriate but it is also humiliating and is bound to garner more backlashes. And it should. Asking rape victims to plan ahead of their assault is absurd. The final verdict: rape is certainly NOT like car accidents Barbara Listing.
