Belgian newspaper prints picture of Barack Obama which was doctored to make him look like an ape.
Many a true word is often spoken in jest. It is for this reason that it’s hard to buy the weak apology of a Belgian Newspaper that transformed images of Barack and Michelle Obama to resemble apes or look past the blatantly racist ideology it upholds.
Typically, political figures have no choice but to bite the bullet and take media representations in their stride. But it’s different this time. De Morgen has prompted international outrage and reopened the debate over the extent that racism still plagues the 21st century. The question on everyone’s mind: If the President of the United States of America is still subjected to racism, what must be the plight of the average Black American?
The modern Belgian newspaper De Morgen is being sharply criticized for printing an image representing President Barack Obama and the First Lady as apes.
De Morgen officially apologized in its Monday edition, acknowledging the images were in "bad taste." It’s important to recognize that the newspaper only apologized because it kind of had to. Given the unprecedented backlash, they weren’t going to sustain their bigotry feature. They had to drop it like the hot potato its become.
"When you consider the fragment apart from its context, which is a properly worked out satirical section, then you don't see the joke but just a picture evoking sheer racism," the newspaper said. "We wrongly assumed that racism is no longer accepted, and that in this way it could be the subject of a joke."
While we all enjoy a good laugh – racism never has, and never will, amount to either entertainment or freedom of speech.
Contrary to what the newspaper claims, everyone has reviewed the situation in context. We all have a sense of humor but, racism is never funny.
Do you think the newspaper was being funny or downright racist?
