Bill Maher just made a very wrong move and no, it’s not about insulting religions of the world or anything.
The host of HBO's political talk show "Real Time With Bill Maher" posted a tweet about the militant group Hamas soon after the Israeli military launched a new ground operation into the most densely populated part of the Gaza Strip, home to nearly 2 million Palestinians.
While Maher’s take on the extremist organization was understandable, the analogy which he chose to describe Hamas turned out to be incredibly sexist.
Dealing w/ Hamas is like dealing w/ a crazy woman who's trying to kill u - u can only hold her wrists so long before you have to slap her— Bill Maher (@billmaher) July 18, 2014
Subsequently, outrage ensued.
The irony in Maher’s tweet is unmistakable because he is the same person who slammed Muslim extremists over treatment of women not two months ago, following the kidnapping of nearly 300 Nigerian girls by terrorist group Boko Haram.
Following are some more tweets from the backlash:
@billmaher That's racist, sexist and very misinformed. Study the history of Palestine before making such an ignorant comment.— Orália (@oritp91) July 18, 2014
The Washington Post blogger Max Fisher also tweeted his reaction:
Just FYI Bill Maher has always been a horrible intolerant person https://t.co/MkbHJEbtpn— Max Fisher (@Max_Fisher) July 18, 2014
@billmaher Jesus dude. People are dying as you tweet that.— Connor Mason (@conmas) July 18, 2014
@billmaher You're a sexist & ignorant pig.— Paige (@PaigeVBA) July 18, 2014
Sure, people are entitled to their opinion and can say or tweet whatever it is they want to. But pseudo-liberal commentators like Maher have some sort of responsibility towards their audiences. They shouldn’t even attempt to imply through a crazy analogy that a “crazy woman” deserves to be beaten.
It’s a well-known fact that Maher hates religion. People have continued loving him despite his extreme anti-faith rhetoric. However this time around, it seems, he has crossed a line that even the staunchest of his supporters won’t approve of.
