Birmingham Airport Shut After Light Aircraft Crash

The crash involved a two-seater private Cessna light aircraft which police said was believed to have had a ""hard landing"" and subsequently caught fire.

One of the men was seriously injured and was airlifted to hospital. The second man suffered back pain and flash burns, and was also taken to hospital.

""The plane was carrying human organs for transplant -- as soon as the casualties were secure, these organs were also rescued and under police escort have been taken to their destination,"" police said.

""A thorough investigation will now be undertaken with regard to the cause of the accident in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority.""

Birmingham Airport said all flights had been suspended and the airport closed until at least 8 p.m.
