Even too much of a "good" thing is counterproductive, so it's no surprise that a university student in Brazil died after having 25 shots of vodka in less than 60 seconds.
When Humberto Moura Fonseca, 23, necked his 25th shot in Bauru, South-Western Brazil as part of a drinking game, his mates celebrated his win. But then, he started feeling dizzy and died of alcohol poisoning en route to the hospital.
According to his friend Rodrigo Pancetti – who witnessed both his drinking spree and subsequent collapse – Fonseca was a big-time vodka lover.
"Humberto and the others were really up for it," Pancetti said. "On his Facebook there’s a quote, a motto, from the Russian poet Vladimir Maiakovski which says, 'It is better to die from vodka than from boredom.' I never thought that would become reality. But once he had finished he said he felt ill and suddenly collapsed."
The two men whom Fonseca beat to win the fatal title are also fighting for their lives in ICU. Investigations are underway to determine who organized this game of death.
