With the election come and gone, General David Petraeus offered his resignation to President Obama because he had, in his own words, "showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
Petraeus had led the CIA as its director since Obama tapped him for the role on September 6th, 2011. The timing of the announcement seems consciously apolitical: the same news right before the election could have affected the race, and there are expected to be many open cabinet positions, so Petraeus' departure will be hidden as much as anything of this nature could be by similar, if less scandalous news.
