In this amazing video below, a group of construction workers, students and bystanders lift a burning car to save a motorcyclist trapped underneath the vehicle after a vicious crash. The footage was shot Monday in Utah, and shows a group of about 10-15 people lifting the 4,000 pound car before the motorcycle driver is pulled to safety. Police in Utah say the man, identified as 21-year-old Brandon Wright from Logan, was in stable condition after surgery Monday evening.
This is one of those videos you may have to watch again, and then share with family and friends, and then watch again after you send it to them. It’s shocking and scary at moments, as it’s uncertain at first if the group of bystanders will be able to lift the car, but ultimately it proves the power in numbers when people band together to do the right thing.
The group has been credited with saving the man's life, 21-year-old Brandon Wright from Logan, and the Logan Police Department in Utah wants to give them credit, despite the group going about their day after the incident. It was a "life-saving move that the Logan Police Department does not want to go unnoticed," said Jeff Curtis, assistant chief of the police department in Logan.
The crash that started the incident occurred Monday morning on a street near Utah State University when the BMW shown in the video pulled out of a parking lot in front of the motorcycle. Curtis said the motorcyclist tried to avoid the car, which resulted in him lying the motorcycle down and crashing into the vehicle.
After Wright crashed, gas quickly spilled out of the motorcycle and ignited, setting the motorcycle and the front end of the car on fire, Curtis said. The motorcyclist then became lodged underneath the burning vehicle.
The video shows as bystanders look under the BMW for the man trapped, and then captures the first daring man who tries to lift the car on his own. A crowd quickly grows to help the man, trying unsuccessfully at first to lift the car, then finally pushing it high enough for a construction worker to pull the man’s limp body from the wreckage.
The crowd included a man in a suit, numerous construction workers wearing hard hats, a woman in sandals and a young man in a backpack who was most likely a student. Great to see that the bystander effect was not in effect here, and that everyday citizens decided to help when they were needed most, rather than sitting and watching bug-eyed.
Watch the video yourself, and try to keep this hands-on-deck mentality whenever you’re in public. You never know when you might be called on.
