A 9-year-old dog named Carmen truly lived up to being “man’s best friend” as she turned out to be canine-hero during a fire in Cincinnati, Ohio. But now, she’s on a ventilator and fighting for her life.

Firefighters found Carmen on top of her owner, Ben Ledford, trying to shield the 33-year-old man from smokes and flames. He did not survive.
But Carmen did. She ended up at the Cincinnati's Care Center, a critical care veterinary hospital, where vets have placed her on a ventilator “battling severe lung damage.”
The team of vets who are working round the clock to make sure she’s comfortable and well taken care of say she has a 50/50 chance of coming off it and being able to breathe on her own.
Ledford's family and friends, though mourning the loss of Ben, are hoping that Carmen makes it. They’ve put together a fundraising site to help pay for Carmen’s medical bills.
Dogs evidently have a sixth sense when it comes to trouble – and they do not hesitate in trying to be heroes – but hopefully Carmen will make it out of this ordeal healthy and happy!
