Caught on tape, the video of a journalist being slapped by a frenzied crowd at Madison Square Garden has gone viral.

A video of leading Indian journalist Rajdeep Sardesai being slapped Monday in New York City has gone viral.

Sardesai was roughed up by supporters of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi outside Madison Square Garden. The attack came shortly before a public address by the head of state.

@JFK_America was the first to tweet, "Mob of people attacking an Indian journalist for being critical of Narendra Modi on the past. Accused of being a traitor".

Before the attack, a crowd of about 50 people surrounded Sardesai and his cameraman shouting pro-Modi slogans. Allegedly, Sardesai was trying to calm the mob down.

Sardesai is also tweeting about the event and seems to take the slap in stride.

Sardesai's book, The Election that Changed India, will be released in November this year.

Mr. Modi has been a controversial figure internationally for his alleged involvement in communal riots in India in 2002 that killed 2,000 Muslims in his home-state Gujarat.
