Newly released pictures show the dentist who killed Cecil the lion illegally hunted a black bear 10 years ago and tried to cover up the slaying.
The shocking images, obtained by ABC through a Freedom of Information Act request, show Dr. Walter Palmer posing alongside the carcass with a bow and arrow in Wisconsin in 2006.
According to the court documents reviewed by the news outlet, “Palmer had a permit to kill a bear in one county, but he shot the bear 40 miles from away in an area where he did not have a permit to hunt.”
He reportedly tried to bribe his guides with $20,000 to make false statements to federal investigation but they didn’t lie to the authorities.
Palmer eventually had to pay $2,938 in fines and was sentenced to a year of probation.

Palmer prompted international outrage last month after it was revealed he killed the 13-year-old lion Cecil during an illegal hunt in Zimbabwe.
Since then he has kept a low public profile. But the backlash hasn’t really stopped. More than 200,000 people have signed a petition on the WhiteHouse.gov website to have the dentist extradited.
