Charles Darwin Receives Almost 4,000 Votes Against Science Denier Congressman

Republican Rep. Paul Broun, running unopposed for his congressional seat, got an unexpected challenge from Charles Darwin, the late 19th century biologist.

Republican Rep. Paul Broun of Athens-Clark County in Georgia had an unexpected opponent in his otherwise unopposed election: evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin. Never mind that Darwin has been dead for more than a century, his ideas are more up to date than Rep. Broun’s. Broun doesn’t believe in evolution, which he calls “a lie, straight from the pit of hell.” But he doesn’t stop there, the big bang theory and embryology are also the dark whispers of Satan.

Look, I know people like this are out there. What I want to know is, who are the over 200,000 people who voted for him? Still, I’m optimistic. Charles Darwin has nothing but time—just keep running him, and he will have his posthumous congressional seat eventually.

However Darwin does have some competition. Votes were also cast for “Anyone Else,” “Anyone but Broun” and “Bill Nye the Science Guy.”
