Who is Charles Manson?
Charles Manson, who is also known as Charles Milles Manson, is a convicted serial killer.
Manson in 1960’s founded a hippie cult group known as "the Family". He manipulated this group into viciously killing others on his behalf.
Manson along with his followers, were convicted in 1969 of multiple murders, including that of the actress Sharon Tate.
Background: Manson’s Childhood And 20’s:
Manson was born to a 16-year-old Ohio girl named Kathleen Maddox. She had to run away from her home at the age of 15. Kathleen spent much of her time in jail and couldn't take care of her son. Manson spent his childhood at his relatives and at special reform schools.
Manson started stealing and burglary at the age of nine and in 1955, at the age of twenty; he married a waitress named Rosalie Willis. They also had a son together. After the birth of his first child, he was soon sent to prison. Rosalie divorced Manson in June 1957.
He again got married to a prostitute named Candy Stevens, she also divorced him later.
Manson kept coming in and out of jail during the period of 1955 to 1966. Whenever he was out of prison he earned his living by stealing checks from mailboxes, and conning people.
Manson, The Musician:
It was in 1960’s when Manson was jailed for six years. During this time he became friends with Alvin "Creepy" Karpis, former member of Ma Barker's gang, who taught him how to play the steel guitar.
At this point and time, Manson got so obsessed with music that he actually became hopeful for a successful music career. He began practicing music and wrote several songs.
Manson was once again released from prison in 1967. Hoping for a good music career, with a guitar and drugs, he was able to get a good number of followers.
Manson somehow also managed to record a song ‘Never Learn Not to Love’ with the Beach Boys. With the help of Beach Boy’s Dennis Wilson, he met Terry Melcher. Manson believed Melcher could help him in building his music career but he was left disappointed.
Manson, The Manipulator:
Manson was brilliant at manipulating people. Along with some of his followers he moved to Spahn Ranch which became eventually a cult compound for "the Family."
Manson formed his own philosophy by taking pieces from various religions. He believed that the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" from their White Album, predicted an upcoming race war.
Manson thought "Helter skelter," was going to occur in the summer of 1969 and blacks will slaughter all the white people.
When what Manson predicted did not happen, he told his followers to show the blacks how to do it.
Manson, The Murderer:
Manson asked four of his followers to kill whoever is inside the house 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles. It belonged to Terry Melcher but he no longer lived there. Actress Sharon Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski, had rented the house.
Manson's followers murdered Tate, her unborn baby, and some guests who were visiting her on August 9, 1969.
Manson's Trial and Prison:
In December 1969, Manson and his followers were finally arrested. The trial began on July 24, 1970. Manson was found guilty of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to death.
However he was acquitted from the penalty when California Supreme Court outlawed the death penalty in 1972.
Charles Manson now serves a lifetime sentence and is currently being held in California's Corcoran Prison.
