Following pressure from consumers and activist groups, Cheerios has announced that their original cereal will be going GMO free!
"We switched from what we were using to non-GMO corn and non-GMO pure sugar cane," said General Mills spokesman Mike Siemienas.
He further stated that the company did not change the formula, and that the company has never used genetically modified oats. Rather, he asserted that the company has only ever used pure whole-grain oats.
However, he did say that the company did switch from using beet sugar, which can sometimes be genetically modified. Furthermore, they have switched from different sources of corn, in order to ensure that they are not genetically modified.
It’s no surprise that Cheerios opted to make this change given their negative response when news broke that they used GMO ingredients about a year ago. Since then, they have been the subject of a great amount of scrutiny, being criticized for not explicitly providing this information to their consumers.
What do you think about Cheerios' change? Will you eat their cereal now that they do not contain GMOs? Let us know in the comment section below.
