The Big Bang Theoryis among four major American series that Chinese authorities have ordered to be taken down from streaming video websites. The measure is an attempt to close a loophole in legislation which has let foreign shows run online, despite the fact that the shows are not allowed on television.
No reason has been provided unlike previous orders.
The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) issued the executive orders for video streaming sites to stop showing The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife, NCIS and The Practice.
As soon as the news spread, people took to Twitter to register their reactions.
Some of the fans of the show were downright outraged over the decision:
Holy!!!They banned <the Big Bang theory> in china!! well...they banned many American TV series!! Damn it!!!! WHY!! WHY!!! WHY!!!!!!— Sheldon Wang (@sheldonsthebest) April 26, 2014
The Big Bang theory is now unavailable in China due to government policy. I have to use VPN to get an access to Twitter. Socialism is CRAP!!— Jerry Chu (@JerryChu6) April 26, 2014
Others were perplexed over the rationale of the decision:
Why is Big Bang Theory banned in China! It's odd...it's just a bunch of nerdy guys doing silly things.— Lingjiao Mo (@lingjiaomo) April 26, 2014
Interestingly, a lot of people were jubilant:
China has banned the Big Bang Theory from airing. In other news, I love China.— ashanti (@ian0012) April 28, 2014

And, of course, a little sarcasm goes a long way:

The Big Bang Theory, the TV show about inspiring hot chicks to date ugly (but supposedly smart) people, allegedly banned in China.— Gnomon Simony (@jinxray) April 26, 2014
It's sad to think that people in China are banned from watching "The Big Bang Theory" but there are still lots of other cures for insomnia.— Ben Siemon (@BenjaminJS) April 28, 2014
