China Smoking Ban Limps In To effectE

Smoking in indoor public places such as hotels and restaurants was banned in China yesterday but critics fear it will be ignored.

Cigarettes are linked to the deaths of one million Chinese every year and 30% of adults in the country light up.

People smoke in hospitals and even on some flights.

Experts said the ban won’t work as it does not specify penalties and the state owns a tobacco syndicate which rakes in revenues.

Its National Office of Tobacco Control said: “There are imperfections.”
