Horrified witnesses looked on in the aftermath of the shooting in the Clackamas mall.
A shooter opened fire at a mall in Clackamas, a town in Portland, OR, killing two people before taking his own life. CNN reports that witnesses heard at least twenty shots. The shooter, who has not been officially identified, was wearing a hockey mask and a bulletproof vest.
"We believe there was one and only one gunman, and that the gunman is deceased." said James Rhoades, a sherrif's spokesperson. At least one more person was left in critical condition.
"We have a young lady in the hospital fighting for her life right now," Sheriff Craig Roberts said at a news conference late Tuesday.
The murderer allegedly announced, "I am the shooter," before opening fire indiscriminately on mall-goers.
"I heard, 'I am the shooter,' and then all of a sudden five or six round just echoing," said witness Austin Patty, who works at a Macy's within the mall.
Shaun Wik, 20, had a spooky, prophetic moment, just seconds before the shooting: he opened a fortune cookie with the line: "Live for today. Remember yesterday. Think of tomorrow."
Then, he heard three shots. A man he believes was the gunman yelled, "Get down!" but Wik and his girlfriend ran.
"If I had looked back, I might not be standing here," Wik said. "I might have been one of the ones who got hit."
Kira Rowland told KGW-TV that she was shopping at Macy's with her infant son when the shots started.
"All of a sudden you hear two shots, which sounded like balloons popping. Everybody got on the ground. I grabbed the baby from the stroller and got on the ground."
Rowland heard people screaming and crying, then put her baby back in the stroller and ran.
