Former Secretary of State and possible 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton defended using private email for government correspondence as a matter of convenience.
Clinton said she opted to use her private email which she said was allowed by the state department so she could access both work and personal emails on one device. She admitted during the press conference that it would have been easier to just have a second email and carry a second phone.
“Looking back, it would have been better for me to use two separate phones and two email accounts.” Clinton said. “But I thought using one device would be simpler, and obviously it hasn’t worked out that way.”
Former Obama speechwriter defended Clinton saying it might have been impossible to have both emails on one device.
@jpodhoretz you couldn't with WH accounts (and I guess State too) until maybe 2011-12— Jon Favreau (@jonfavs) March 10, 2015
Clinton noted that the vast majority of her work-related emails were sent to government employees with government addresses and thereby programmed into the system. She said she deleted many of the personal emails like her daughter’s wedding details or messages to friends, saying that most would understand the respect for privacy.
While her work-related emails will be made public this spring, Clinton’s poor excuse for using a private email address will certainly do her no favors in a possible presidential run. The damage is already done in presenting herself as a transparent politician.
