Five passengers on a U.S. government surveillance mission died when their plane crashed along a section of jungle on Colombia's border with Panama.

Only one person survived after a Dash 8 plane crashed on Saturday in an area where Colombian guerrillas and drug trafficking gangs operate. The cause of the accident was unclear.

Military sources declined to reveal the identities of those on board but the plane was carrying five Americans and one Panamanian.

The survivor was found by search and rescue teams and flown to a hospital.

The United States is Colombia's principal ally in the fight against drug trafficking and illegal armed groups, which earn millions for cocaine production and transport.
