The country’s state TV showed thousands of North Koreans paying their respects and offering flowers. Grand dance parties were held and soccer matches were played.
Kim Il-Sung birthday celebrations were held amid escalating tensions between North Korea and South Korea over military exercises and nuclear tests.
Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader attended orchestral performances and presided over sports games. His grandfather led the country from its founding in 1948 through the 1950-53 Korean War until he died in 1994.
