The dead bodies of two infants found near an abandoned parking lot in North Philadelphia have caused confusion among the authorities in the fifth biggest city of the United States.

What makes the case even more bizarre is the fact that the babies, one boy and one girl who appear to be newborns, had wounds and lacerations consistent with medical autopsies.

As The Philadelphia Inquirer reports, two young children in the city's Kensington section discovered the bodies while playing near the deserted area. At first, 9-year-old Kasime Crawford and his slightly older friend thought someone had left two dolls near the trashcans, and left the bodies where they were. However, the smell alerted the children next morning, leading their parents to contact the police.

“The first thing that came to my mind was, well, they're probably real babies,” explained Ronnie Jackson, the boy’s father. "One was big, one was small. They both looked like they were about a day old.”

The babies were found in fetal position near the side of the road, with their umbilical cords still attached. Moreover, the bodies were blue and had deep lacerations on their stomach and heads, according to the father.

The detectives soon confirmed the babies were newborns and the medical examiner later revealed that someone had indeed performed autopsies on the infants — though “why” remains an important question.

“I don't know who would do that to these babies, or why,” said Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman. “But I know it's sad that these babies weren't properly put to rest.”

So far, the police only have one clue: a black pickup truck earlier spotted in the area apparently dumping garbage in the lot already littered with all kinds of illegally disposed trash. However, if the vehicle had any connection to the dead babies remains unclear.

“We just want to make sure the integrity of the investigation is protected,” said Lt. Juan Perez. “And make sure that these children are properly treated with the appropriate respect.”

Police and medical examiners have not yet revealed if the two newborns were related, or when they died. The case is still under investigation, but according to the local police, it is one of the strangest and saddest cases they have witnessed.
