One of Donald Trump’s Ohio-based campaign chairs, Kathy Miller, was left with ultimately no choice but to resign on Thursday after making some outrageous comments about African-Americans and racism.
Speaking to The Guardian, Miller essentially said that racism did not exist until Barack Obama became president and she called the prominent Black Lives Matter movement a “stupid waste of time.”
“I don’t think there was any racism until Obama got elected,” Miller said. “We never had problems like this ... Now, with the people with the guns, and shooting up neighborhoods, and not being responsible citizens, that’s a big change, and I think that’s the philosophy that Obama has perpetuated on America.”
While Miller has since apologized and maintains she was not speaking on behalf of the Trump campaign, she has still received backlash for her crass statements.
The criticism is well deserved, seeing as how she wasn’t concerned about her remarks being hurtful while she was saying them. She only decided to apologize as a form of damage control to save her own skin.
When it was mentioned during her rant that her comments could be taken offensively, she replied, “I don’t care, it’s the truth.”
In addition to her attacks against Obama and BLM, Miller proclaimed that a low African-American voter turnout could be the result of, “The way they’re raised.”
Miller totally dismissed The Civil Rights Era, claiming there was no racism during the 1960s, which can be disputed by simply opening a history book.
She also declared that black people who have not excelled in America have only themselves to blame.
“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you,” she reportedly said.
“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly,” she continued.
While her comments are infuriating and indicate a complete disconnect from reality, one can expect this mentality from a Trump advocate.
Many of his supporters and staffers have expressed similar sentiments about Black Lives Matter and continue to downplay the fact that racism is an inherent component of American culture.
With that said, Miller is simply perpetuating the false narrative that her political party wants Americans to believe.
However, she couldn’t have chosen a worse time to share these thoughts, considering Trump is vehemently trying to boost his appeal to black voters.
Despite the fact that Trump’s likability among black voters comes up pathetically short in the polls, he has made many pandering attempts — including exploiting the recent tragic death of NBA star Dwyane Wade’s cousin.
He also boldly proclaimed that if he is elected, he will make life so great for black people that by the end of his first term he will have earned 95 percent of the black vote.
In his efforts, he has also been quite offensive. Just last month he said that black people have “nothing to lose” by voting for him and totally bashed black communities to make a point about how he will supposedly fix them.
It got even worse on Wednesday when he visited a black church in Cleveland. During this visit, cameras caught the presidential candidate smiling and chuckling while black boxing promoter, Don King, used the N-word to introduce him.
Needless to say, Trump is doing a good enough job offending black voters on his own, and he certainly didn’t need Miller making matters worse.
Having people like her on his team coupled with his own antics, he could never even hope to improve his likability among black people — whether he gets elected or not.
As karma would have it, following Miller’s inevitable resignation, she was replaced by a black woman named Tracy Winbush, The Daily Beast reports.
