Donald Trump, one of the two people most likely to be the next commander-in-chief, achieved new heights of bigotry and self-entitlement by exploiting Saturday’s tragic mass shooting to advance his own chauvinist agenda.
Capitalizing on the massacre inside an LGBTQ nightclub, Pulse, in Orlando that left at least 50 dead and 53 injured, the billionaire business mogul called on President Barack Obama to step down. He also used the opportunity to reiterate his controversial call to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
“I said this was going to happen — and it is only going to get worse,” Trump said in a statement Sunday. He criticized Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for (what he claimed was) her desire to “dramatically increase admissions from the Middle East,” adding that her presidency would mean “hundreds of thousands” more migrants.
“And we will have no way to screen them, pay for them, or prevent the second generation from radicalizing,” the former reality TV star added.
Then, in true Trump fashion, he followed up his self-congratulatory comments with a series of tweets.
He started with acknowledging the tragedy:
Horrific incident in FL. Praying for all the victims & their families. When will this stop? When will we get tough, smart & vigilant?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
Before patting himself on the back for predicting the incident:
Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don't want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
He also demanded Obama resign:
Is President Obama going to finally mention the words radical Islamic terrorism? If he doesn't he should immediately resign in disgrace!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
In addition, he copied and pasted a rumor from an unsourced tweet to blame the massacre on Muslims:
Reporting that Orlando killer shouted "Allah hu Akbar!" as he slaughtered clubgoers. 2nd man arrested in LA with rifles near Gay parade.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
The rant was followed by a new call for Trump’ infamous ban:
What has happened in Orlando is just the beginning. Our leadership is weak and ineffective. I called it and asked for the ban. Must be tough— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
Interestingly, the Orlando shooter Omar Mateen was not a migrant. He was born in New York and was a resident of Port St. Lucie, Florida.
