As if President-elect Donald Trump’s ego wasn’t already sizable enough, he’s got another feather in his cap as Time magazine has named him the “Person of the Year.”
The title is not inherently congratulatory because among the 90 times Time has named a person, it has also included Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Richard Nixon, and Vladmir Putin.
This year, the publication has cited the “upheaval in American politics brought about by the election campaign and victory of the New York businessman” as the reason for their choice
No matter how you feel about him, it’s undeniable that Trump — a man with no political experience, almost no establishment support, and a litany of scandals — was able to emerge victorious.
His out-of-nowhere campaign and his looming administration is, in many ways, threatening to disrupt the global order that has existed for decades.
“Trump’s victory represents a long-overdue rebuke to an entrenched and arrogant governing class,” Time said in its announcement.
Following the announcement, Trump told NBC’s “Today Show" that "It's a great honor, it means a lot."
His response is ironic because Trump has, on more than one occasion, slammed Time magazine for various reasons.
The Time Magazine list of the 100 Most Influential People is a joke and stunt of a magazine that will, like Newsweek, soon be dead. Bad list!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 27, 2013
Just took a look at Time Magazine-looks really flimsy like a free handout at a parking lot! The sad end is coming-just like Newsweek!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 2, 2013
The announcement also comes nearly a year to the day that he called out the magazine, claiming that it would never pick him as a person of the year.
I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite They picked person who is ruining Germany— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 9, 2015
Twitter was quick to react to the announcement, with some observant users pointing out that Time had given him prominent “devil horns” on the cover, while others indulged their Photoshop prowess.
Kudos to the designer who made the "M" look like devil horns. We will send you care packages after Trump throws you in prison. pic.twitter.com/jsqKxC8IOq— Rex Huppke (@RexHuppke) December 7, 2016
