A video released by the government of Mexico captures the moment drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman entered his prison cell's shower before escaping via the roughly 50-cm x 50-cm hole and 1.5-kilometer long tunnel.
Guzman, known as "El Chapo" (Shorty) in Spanish, the world's most wanted drug lord, rose from a ramshackle mountain village to become the Mexican government's most powerful adversary in a war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
Guzman's cartel has smuggled billions of dollars worth of cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into the United States, and fought vicious turf wars with other Mexican gangs.
He was finally caught in February 2014.
Three prison officials from Altiplano, a maximum security prison, including the director of the facility, Valentin Cardenas, have been fired. So far, El Chapo is nowhere to be found.
