Elizabeth Edwards Shared Private Pain With Public

A friend of the family says Elizabeth Edwards' health had rapidly deteriorated over the last few weeks and that her adult daughter and estranged husband John came to be with her. That's according to David "Mudcat" Saunders, who is also a political adviser.

Edwards died Tuesday at her North Carolina home.

She became an advocate in her own right for health care reform and for the poor, two issues that had driven her husband, too. President Barack Obama issued a statement saying the nation benefited from the voice Edwards gave to the cause of helping the less fortunate.

Her death came a day after her family issued a statement saying doctors said further treatments for cancer would not be productive. Its latest statement thanks the network of supporters who admired her for her struggle despite failing health and a crumbling marriage. Elizabeth Edwards was 61.
