It is being reported that the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service was fake.
The news sparked outrage among the hearing-impaired, who claim that the interpreter who stood next to the podium and interpreted the dignitaries, including heads of states, religious leaders and other celebrated figures was a phony.
The question is; why would an unqualified person be appointed as an interpreter for an event of such magnitude?
Board member of the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section Braam Jordaan told Special Broadcasting Services (SBS) he believed the interpreter is a fake.
"I was really upset and humiliated by the mystery interpreter who was supposed to be signing what Barack Obama, the president of United States of America, was saying," he told SBS."He made up his own signs."
Here’s the video of the guy in action:
It is amazing to see him so confidently making up the signs as the various dignitaries talked.
"It was an event the whole world was watching, but some deaf people couldn't understand a word spoken at Mandela’s memorial" this upsets me— Celebrate Madiba (@thandz_x) December 11, 2013
http://t.co/TRqdQwjAUd I feel like there were some brilliant sitcom-level shenanigans that led to this moment, shenanigans we may never know— Ryan Northpole (@ryanqnorth) December 11, 2013

Shame on this male so called interpreter on the stage. What is he signing? He knows that the deaf cannot vocally boo him off. Shame on him !— wilma newhoudt (@newhoudt) December 10, 2013
Gets worse. According to deaf population the interpreter at Mandela memorial yesterday was a fake! Just stood there signing crap— Johann Joubert (@JohannJoubert) December 11, 2013
What is more interesting is that the African paper Mail & Guardian reportsthat the same interpreter was also present at an African National Congress Conference last year. Here is a video of him interpreting Shoot the Boer, sung by party president Jacob Zuma:
