A U.S. Department of Justice report has revealed the inherent racism of police officers in Ferguson, Missouri. Police officers in the predominantly black city have routinely violated the constitutional rights of Ferguson’s black residents through discriminatory traffic stops, using excessive force and making racist jokes about African-Americans on their official email accounts. One officer said Obama wouldn’t be president for long because “what black man holds a steady job for four years?” Another said a black woman in New Orleans was admitted to a hospital for an abortion and then got a check two weeks later from “Crime Stoppers.”
The full report is expected to be released on Wednesday. So far the report’s findings underscore the embedded racism fueled by black stereotypes in Ferguson’s police department that puts the shooting death of an unarmed black man, Michael Brown, last summer clearly into context. Ferguson is a majority black city with a majority white government and police force. This dynamic not only creates a disconnect within the community, but when run by racist whites spurs the kind of racial hostility Ferguson has been dealing with for years. The report’s findings indicate Ferguson has a severe race problem, and if action is not taken soon to change how Ferguson police view the black community – another Darren Wilson is soon to emerge.
