The whistle blowing website Wikileaks and its contentious founder Julian Assange continue to baffle us even at a time when he is still under house arrest. With his new program known as ‘The World Tomorrow’ which is telecasted on the Kremlin-backed English Language satellite channel, Russia Today, he had the most unexpected of all guests – the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.

The interview was conducted via video link from England where Assange is currently under house arrest. In his first television interview since 2006, Hassan when questioned about the reason for Hezbollah’s urge of political dialogue in Syria said that President Bashar al Assad has served Palestinians’ cause well.

On the other hand, he said that the opposition is not ready to engage in any sort of dialogue since the first day. Needless to mention here that Hassan could not end the discussion without mentioning the illegitimacy of the creation behind the state of Israel and poked fun at their intelligence for their inability of decrypting a simple village slang that the fighters of Hezbollah use when communicating with each other.

Apart from the rudimentary details of the interview, there are two vital aspects that need to be outlined regarding the agenda of Hassan Nasrallah and Hezbollah. First, regarding his stance on Syria unrest it is a well established fact that the militant organization is well funded and financed by Iran and Syria and in such circumstances no one can be that naïve to believe that Nasrallah would support any move that would be based on the fall of al-Assad’s regime.

Irrespective of all the bloodshed that takes place in Syria, Hezbollah would turn a blind eye towards it and urge on the continuation of the diplomatic process. Second important factor is regarding the solution he suggests for the long standing problem of Palestine. He suggests that the only solution to the conflict is the formation of a single democratic state where Jews, Muslims and Christians can live in peace. Something which is completely hypothetical. Even Nasrallah knows that such a solution can never materialize.

The fact is that organizations like Hezbollah by suggesting such solutions distance or diminish the very chances of peace prospects that may resolve the dispute. In actual, they are actually paving ground for legitimizing their own existence.

Just imagine, if Palestinians are able to achieve independence and Israel ends its atrocities against Palestinians and Lebanon what possible reason could a militia like Hezbollah have to conduct their activities. Hence it is important to understand that greater the time it takes for peace to make place, greater is the strength organizations like Hezbollah will gain in the cause of fighting against an enemy they wish never leaves.

Russia Today in a statement said a further nine shows would roll out weekly at various timeslots. They are, of course, keeping the guest lists secret.
