German Chancellor Angela Merkel has more than one reason to be happy in July.
First, her country won the 2014 FIFA World Cup and according to recent polls, her popularity in Germany has gone up as the team progressed in the tournament.
Apart from being a die-hard soccer fan herself, Merkel is also considered a good luck charm for the German squad. As some supporters and team players often put it “Our team’s twelfth man is a woman."
Another reason for her to enjoy this month is that she will celebrate her 60th birthday on July 17.
Merkel has undoubtedly been one of the most important political figures in her country.
A former research scientist and a woman emerging from a center right party, she made history by becoming the first female chancellor of Germany since 2005 as well as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 2000.
Merkel is also the first chancellor born after World War II, and the first post-reunification head of government to hail from the former East Germany.
But there’s more to her than just that.
Apparently, Merkel also has a lighter side to her personality- one that we do not get to see much of in the media.
Following are some rare photos of the German chancellor that show she can be a fun person to hang around with.
She can strike a pose for a selfie:

She is into gadgets and stuff:

She loves booze:

She can be a little awkward in the pool:

She enjoys hiking:

Who says she can’t have a good laugh?
She can dress up and look like a total bombshell:

She is an animal-lover:

She has had some really awkward photo moments but she really couldn’t care less:
Merkel has, perhaps, experienced some of the most unforgivable photo gaffes as far as world leaders are concerned.
This happened while Merkel was arriving for the welcoming ceremony for Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa in Berlin March 15, 2006.
However, the lady keeps her spirits high and remains one of the most camera-friendly faces to date.
