It seems like the whole world is out to scrutinize Obama and his every word and action. Indeed the time till the elections has to be very cautiously spent by the US President. Trayvon Martin’s killing is a very sensitive issue at the moment in America. There is a lot of hurt and anger as well as demands for justice, which for the US citizens have not been fast enough in this case.

One of the most recent barbed criticisms has come from Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich who shot down President Obama’s condolence to Trayvon Martin’s family as disgraceful. In all fairness to the President, his words, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon,” were most likely meant as a point of relating to the family like his own and affiliating with the family of the victim. However, the critic, Mr. Gingrich claims the comment is extremely racist as what the victim looked like should not be a matter at all. A victim deserves protection and justice regardless of their skin color or ethnicity.

To be exact, Gingrich voiced his criticism in the following words, “Is the president suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it didn’t look like him? That’s just nonsense dividing this country up. It is a tragedy this young man was shot. It would have been a tragedy if he had been Puerto Rican or Cuban, or if he had been white, or if he had been Asian-American, or if he’d been a Native American. At some point, we ought to talk about being Americans. When things go wrong to an American, it is sad for all Americans. Trying to turn it into a racial issue is fundamentally wrong. I really find it appalling.”

Obama’s exact words had been, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon. I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and we’re going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

Trayvon Martin was killed on February 26 when 28 year old George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic shot and killed him. Zimmerman claims to be acting in self-defense. However Trayvon was not found to be amed and so far Zimmerman has not been arrested – a fact that has created great rage and hue and cry from the locals.
