Glenn Greenwald criticized Peter King for his demand to prosecute reporters during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN. The Guardian journalist was one of the first to publish the secret NSA surveillance documents.
Republican King said on Tuesday that all reporters who disclosed the classified information should be criminally prosecuted. He said, “If they willingly knew that this was classified information, I think action should be taken, especially on something of this magnitude.”
Greenwald replied to King’s demand by saying that it was ‘staggering’ to see the Republican making such claims. He said, “It’s bad enough to call for that, it is extraordinarily menacing that he did so based on a complete falsehood.”
The columnist then pointed out King’s support of the Irish Republican Army:
“The last thing I would try to do is read what goes on internally in the swamp of Peter King’s brain,” he remarked. “What I do know is that he has a history of all kinds of radical and extremist statements. He himself was a supporter of terrorism for several decades when it was done by the IRA.”
Peter King had also specifically pointed out Glenn Greenwald when he said that the journalist involved in the publication of the ‘sensitive’ leaked documents must be tried in the court. According to the congressman, such exposé compromised the national security of the United States.
