The group, Catholics for Choice, have created a lot of fuss in Kenya with their Condoms4Life campaign! The Catholic Church is incensed and has disassociated itself from it.
Catholics for Choice is a group that describes itself to be, “an unprecedented worldwide public education effort to raise public awareness about the devastating effect of the bishops' ban on condoms. “
The use of condoms has always been controversial in Catholicism. Kenya Episcopal Conference (KEC) Chairman John Cardinal Njue says, “Catholics for choice are not Catholics in the sense of the one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We want those adverts pulled out.”
As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, the campaign ridicules the church teaching of responsible sexual behavior.
However, the propagators of the campaign say in their press release that it is to assure Kenyans that Catholics support the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV.
They say the bishops’ anti-condom claims contradict Pope Benedict XVI who supported the use of condoms saying; “where the intention is to reduce the risk of infection” condoms can be “a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality.”
Catholics for Choice's mission is a sign of care for women's well-being and respecting the people’s right to make moral decisions about their lives.
