A man at Yahoo’s shareholders meeting, before making his work speech, decided to hit on Marissa Mayer, the CEO of the multinational internet corporation.
George Polis, reportedly a Greek investor stood up on stage and went on saying, “I’m George Polis. I have 2,000 shares of Yahoo. I'm Greek, and I'm a dirty old man, and you look attractive, Marissa.” And then the (creepy) man went on with his speech about dividends.
Polis may have meant it as a compliment, but it turned out to be really annoying because it was actually pretty annoying. The audience tried to respond to his awkward beginning by letting out a chuckle or two but even they understood that it was just not the appropriate moment, platform or thing to say to the CEO of Yahoo.
The Greek investor’s statement also underlines the stereotypical mentality of “some” men regarding women in power. It’s actually a really good thing Ms. Mayer didn’t even consider it important to give her reply. There just couldn’t be any.
By the way, this was also Marissa Mayer’s first shareholders meeting and Polis almost ruined it for her. Polis would also like to know that people on the internet are not really pleased with what he said to Mayer. Some are calling him sexist while others are calling the move ‘gross’. One woman wrote, “I doubt any "dirty old women" hit on male CEOs at shareholder meetings.”
Turns out, the man didn’t only make Marissa Mayer uncomfortable, he also embarrassed himself. You can watch him hitting on Yahoo’s CEO in the video above.
