Friday night December 14, 2012 a man pulled out a gun at the busy Excalibur Casino in Las Vegas and shot an unidentified female who worked at the concierge desk, then turned the gun on himself. The unidentified gunman was declared dead at the scene and the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital later that evening according to the Associated Press. The hotel was full of guests for the National Finals Rodeo and a cheerleading convention (not to mention the gamblers in the casino). When the gun shots rang out people scattered. Authorities are investigating any connection and motive the gunman may have to the victim. There were no other victims caught in the crossfire.
This came on the eve of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting (view presidental address here). Trisha Banks (14 year old cheerleader at the hotel for a convention) made the comment: "It's scary after what happened this morning and then this. How can people do this?" It is a question that is on everyone's mind.
A look at the deadliest school massacres in US history timeline shows an escalation in violence. This shooting only resulted in two victims, but it could have been far worse. With gun violence on the rise there is a lot of talk about tougher gun control laws and many assume that will be a top priority in Washington after the Fiscal Cliff is resolved.
