A bus driver heroically rescued 20 elementary school children from her bus which caught on fire as she was dropping them off after school.

On Monday, the unthinkable happened when an elementary school bus in College Park, Maryland burst into flames with 20 children on board after school. But, the driver, Reneita Smith, managed the catastrophe with finesse, and is now considered a local heroine.

Bus driver Smith saved every child from the burning school bus that she was driving, carrying them out individually after the bus caught on fire at around 4:45 p.m. while she was driving along her usual route. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, according to The Independent.

As a mother herself, Smith believed that it’s only natural she braved the burning bus to rescue the school children. Smith said, “I am a mom of two kids, it’s my job to save them.”

She was praised on Facebook by one of the children’s parents, Fazlul Khan, who wrote a public post thanking Smith for going above and beyond her duty as a driver.

In the chilling CBS Baltimore segment, smoke can be seen billowing from the bus as it burns.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire and all children managed to get home safely that night.
