An 18 year-old from Tempe, AZ was arrested when his house cleaner found an IED (improvised explosive device) in his home. Joshua Prater, a high school senior, admitted to building the bomb, but said that he did it eight years ago, and didn’t know it was filled with explosive powder. The investigation is still ongoing, but police reportedly searched Prater’s home, and found more explosive equipment there. It’s unclear if Prater means that he filled the IED with explosives, but forgot that he did so over the years, or if he built the basic structure of the bomb, but someone else filled it with explosives.

Also, Prater, who is a straight A student, would surely be able to subtract 18 (his current age) from 8 (the number of years in the past he claims he built the IED), to conclude that he built a bomb at the age of 10. 10! That means he was both very precocious and evil, or that he is lying. Or that he did build it some number of years ago, and eight was the first number he thought of that sounded about right.

Officials have dismantled the bomb and praised the housekeeper for how she handled the situation. The media is also reporting that Prater’s school was not an intended target. It’s not currently clear what that implies about whether or not there was an intended target, but if there was, it wasn’t his school. If Prater is to be believed, it was probably his 10 year-old nemesis, who has hopefully earned Prater’s friendship or moved away by now. Prater was scheduled to attend the University of Arizona this fall, though they might rescind his acceptance given this little mishap.
