Details are coming out about the fake sign language interpreter, Thamsanqa Jantjie, who stood next to U.S. President Barack Obama and South African President Jacob Zuma and the Mandela family among others, at Nelson Mandela’s memorial. The more we learn, the weirder this gets, and questions about Obama’s security are coming out.
Jantjie gave a lengthy interview where he acknowledged that he was making random hand gestures for four hours. His explanation is bizarre: he claims that he is schizophrenic, and that he started seeing angels entering the audience.
“What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium … I start realizing that the problem is here. And the problem, I don’t know the attack of this problem, how will it comes. Sometimes I react violent on that place. Sometimes I will see things that chase me,” Jantjie said.
According to Jantjie, he realized he was having a schizophrenic episode on stage, next to some of the most powerful people in the world, surrounded by security. He didn’t know if he could become violent. His main task was to hold it together.
"There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation."
Shown footage of himself signing at Mandela’s memorial, Jantjie said, “I don’t remember any of this at all.”
Previous allegations have come out about Jantjie holding a coworker hostage with a brick.
Jantjie’s explanation spawns hundreds of questions. First of all, is he telling the truth? Did Jantjie get on stage, fake his way through Mandela’s memorial and then excuse what he did by claiming he is schizophrenic? Is he a real interpreter who had some kind of breakdown and faked his way through the memorial? Or is he telling the complete truth?
Reporters went to SA Interpreters, the company that hired Jantjie, but they didn’t find SA Interpreters. Did they ever exist? Did they skip town after the fake interpreter debacle? Did Jantjie make them up? What in the world is going on here?
We have checked out the business address on Jantjie's business card. It's an events company, no sign of SA interpreters. @eNCAnews— Karyn Maughan (@karynmaughan) December 12, 2013
And whichever of those scenarios is true, how in the world did the Secret Service let Jantjie stand next to Obama for that long? Whether or not he is a fake interpreter, a real schizophrenic or some combination thereof, how was this guy not vetted?
As these answers come out, there is going to be a major embarrassment for someone. SA Interpreters and/or Jantjie himself scammed the government of South Africa and the U.S. Secret Service, and the result was that an alleged violent schizophrenic spent four hours next to many world leaders, including Barack Obama.
