Committing to Hungary’s xenophobic pledge to not let refugees into the European Union, riot police fired tear gas and water cannons violently at desperate refugees at the country’s border with Serbia on Wednesday.
Tensions erupted on Wednesday when Hungarian authorities blocked off entrance into Hungary from Serbia with a razor-wire fence leaving thousands of desperate migrants halted in their escape from violence and destruction in the Middle East.
The refugees began peacefully protesting for Hungary to “open the door,” but eventually growing frustrations took over and refugees broke through the border gate.
Hungarian forces, complete with armored vehicles, brutally fought back with tear gas and water cannons.
Hungarian authorities are justifying the ruthless counterattack with the childish narrative of “they started it!”
Hungarian police accused refugees of throwing sticks, stones and bottles at police.
And thus, Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said, this “armed mob” must be controlled using “proportionate police force.”
Yet a harsh surge of water versus a tiny stick does not seem a fair comparison of aggression tactics.
"We fled wars and violence and did not expect such brutality and inhumane treatment in Europe,” Iraqi refugee, Amir Hassan, said. "Shame on you Hungarians!"
