Hurricane Tomas Weakens To Category 1 Storm

(CP) Hurricane Tomas has weakened to a Category 1 storm as it heads deeper into the Caribbean Sea.

Still, the storm's maximum sustained winds early Sunday were a powerful 90 mph (145 kph) as it moved west-northwest over the Caribbean. Tomas could weaken slightly more Sunday, but should maintain most of its strength into Tuesday.

Tomas had blown over a cluster of islands, tearing off roofs, damaging houses and downing power lines. It was over open ocean Sunday, 345 miles (555 kilometres) south-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

All tropical storm warnings related to Tomas have been cancelled.
