The revelation that Ariel Castro (not his brothers Onil and Pedro, we have learned) held Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight captive as sex slaves for a full decade has been a shock to the entire country, none more than Arlene Castro, Ariel Castro's daughter. Arlene Castro was likely the last person to see Gina DeJesus before her father kidnapped her (under the guise of offering her a ride), and she learned about her father's actions at the same time that everyone else did. George Stephanopoulos interviewed Arlene on Good Morning America:
"I am absolutely so, so sorry," said Arlene Castro. "I really want to see Gina and I want you to meet my kids. I'm so sorry for everything." She added that she was "disappointed, embarrassed...devastated" by her father's actions. Arlene Castro also said that she has not met Jocelyn, the six year-old daughter of Amanda Berry, fathered, it is widely presumed, by Ariel Castro.
Castro said that she spoke to her father late last month, and that they "were never really that close." Their conversations were rarely more than, "just a 'hello, how are you doing' and 'let me know if you need anything.'"
Stephanopoulos asked Arlene Castro if there was ever any violence in the Castro home growing up, to which Arlene replied, "No, never, never."
Castro lives in Indiana now, but one has to wonder if she ever came home for visits. How did Ariel Castro hide Berry, DeJesus and Knight? We don't know yet, but it seems that he did.
