The Race To Save The Life Of A 423-Lb. 10-Year-Old Boy

When Rokayah and Ade Somantri’s second son was born weighing 7 lbs., they had no idea their son would soon gain so much weight that his life is at stake.

10-year-old Arya Permana from Indonesia weighs an astounding 423 lbs. (192 kg). Doctors fear his extreme obesity is threatening his life. He has been put on an emergency diet in order to reduce weight.

He can hardly walk, has trouble breathing and had to drop out of school. He has taken to wearing a sarong after his parents were no longer able to find clothes that fit him.

People come from near and far to see him.

“My son is growing up at a rapid rate and I am worried for his health,” says his mother Rokayah Somantri.

“I do not know any other way to stop him from gaining more weight than to give him less food,” she laments.

“He is perpetually hungry and has an enormous diet, and can actually eat meals of two adults at one time.”

Though he can’t move around much, he loves spending time in the pool.

“He is always tired and complains of shortness of breath. He only eats and sleeps, and when he is not done with both, he jumps into the bathtub and stays there for hours.”
