Overcoming a disability is never easy, but there are those that rise up against the odds and serve as an inspiration for all of humanity. These are the real heroes. To recognize their contribution to society, the United Nations observes December 3 as the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” to raise awareness and mobilize support.
“Around one billion persons in the world with disabilities face physical, social, economic and attitudinal barriers that exclude them from participating fully and effectively as equal members of society,” according to the U.N.
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued the following statement to mark the occasion:
“More than 1 billion of us live with disabilities. We must remove all barriers that affect the inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in society, including through changing attitudes that fuel stigma and institutionalize discrimination.”
On this day, let’s celebrate some remarkable people who despite their disabilities became a source of inspiration for millions of people in the world.
