Iran Notifies IAEA Over Atomic Deal

Western governments fear Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies [AFP] Iran has handed a letter to the United Nation's nuclear watchdog in Vienna, Austria, in response to a nuclear fuel swap deal brokered by Turkey and Brazil, local media has reported. The letter, signed by Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, says Iran sees the offer to send 1,200 kg of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey - as a breakthrough. Salehi's letter, delivered at a meeting on Monday, reportedly said the deal was "a major step forward" towards defusing tensions over its nuclear energy programme. Iran has pushed major world powers and the UN to implement the deal, with Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) saying "we expect this to be realised as soon as possible".
